Others were dog-ass slow and could take 5-6 minutes to rewind an hour's worth.

Some were very quick and could rewind a two-hour movie in just a minute or so. This took a varying amount of time depending on the VCR. And they were just that, literal magnetic tape held on reels inside the plastic cassette, and just like its little brother the audio cassette, this tape had to be rewound to the beginning when you reached the end.
